Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video we show you how to do an oil change on this 1999 Pontiac Grand Am. You'll need a 15mm socket (ratchet or a wrench would work), an oil filter wrench, drip pan funnel, new oil and oil filter, and jack and jack stands.
If we go under the car here, you'll see the drain is right here. Your oil filter is right there. What you want to do is loosen up that 15mm bolt and make sure you have a drip pan underneath there. When you pull out the bolt, the oil will come pouring out. Also, it will come out a lot easier if you warm up the car a little bit by starting it. Just run the car for a little bit, but then you do need to be careful because the oil will be hot.
I'm going to use an oil filter wrench. Just put that onto the oil filter there and twist that oil filter off. Make sure again that the drip pan is underneath here, because there will be some oil that comes out when you remove that. You see right there. We'll fast-forward a little bit here, and you can see that the oil in this vehicle, we actually just did an intake manifold replacement, so there's a lot of coolant mixed with the oil. If you ever see coolant mixed with the oil, you need to stop and make sure that the other problems with your engine are fixed.
Then you want to take your new oil filter and just put a little bit of fresh oil around the rim of that. Using a paper towel, clean out where the oil filter goes and then push your oil filter back into place. Just twist it in and you can replace that 15mm drain bolt.
Now you want to remove your oil cap here and take your new oil. You want to put a funnel in there so you don't pour oil all over your engine. Just replace the oil. Best practice is to check your manual for how much oil your car takes. In this case it was four and a half quarts. We put four quarts in, started the engine, circulated the oil to make sure it filled up the oil filter and then just rechecked it and made sure that it was to the proper level according to the dipstick.
