In this video, we're going to be working with our 1996 Jeep Cherokee 4.0-liter 6 cylinder. We're going to show you how to change the oil on it. This will be very much the same in a lot of the Wranglers, Grand Cherokees, and other Jeep vehicles that came with this 4.0-liter engine.

Here are the items you'll need for this procedure: 6 qts of engine oil and oil filter, 16mm wrench, funnel, drain bucket
Remove your oil cap. Place it somewhere safe and clean. Using the 16mm wrench, and remove the drain plug at the back of the oil pan. Make sure you have your drain bucket underneath. Reinstall you drain plug, and tighten down with your 16mm wrench.
The oil filter's located just above the starter. If you're using a metal strap wrench, be careful not to touch any of the terminals on the starter while you're under there, otherwise you'll have to do it from the top. Once you've got it loose, you should be able to remove it the rest of the way by hand. Once it's finished draining, remove it the rest of the way by hand. Be sure to tip it so the opening is facing up when you remove it from the vehicle to prevent it from spilling too much more. Then place it in the drain pan, to let it finish draining.
Be sure to check that the gasket is on your old filter, just because it's a little difficult to see the spindle up there. That way we know we're not going to double gasket our oil filter. With a little bit of clean oil on your finger, go ahead and lubricate the gasket to make sure that it doesn't seize onto our engine. Reinstall the filter into the vehicle. Get it on as tight as you can by hand. That's all you need to get these to seal.
Install a funnel into the fill hole on you valve cover, and fill it with six quarts of 10w-30 motor oil. Once we have all the oil in our engine, remove the funnel, reinstall the cap, start the vehicle, and allow it to run until it builds oil pressure. Shut it off, wait for the oil to run back into the pan, and check the level on the dipstick.
