In this video, we're going to be working with our 2012 GMC Acadia 3.6 Liter V6. We're going to show you how to change your engine oil and filter, which is something GM recommends you do every 7,500 miles with full synthetic motor oil. If you ever need parts for your car, you can follow the link down in the description over to 1AAuto.com. Here are the items you'll need for this repair.
Remove the oil cap. This will prevent pressure from staying inside the engine when we open the drain plug and allow the oil to flow out more freely. You may be able to perform an oil change on this vehicle with it on the ground. You can definitely do it with a jack and jack stands but, we're going to put it up on the lift to make it easier to show you what's going on underneath.
The drain plug on this particular vehicle is located here. There's an access hole cut into this sub-frame brace so we can get at it pretty easily. In case it flows out fast and splashes, we're going to put our large drain bucket underneath there to make sure we contain the mess. Loosen the drain plug with a 15 millimeter socket and ratchet or a wrench. Allow the oil to completely drain before re-installing your drain plug. Reinstall your drain plug and torque it to 18 foot pounds. Wipe up any access oil at the bottom of the plug so we'll know if it's leaking after we finish our oil change.
The oil filter is located on the front passenger side of the engine, right under and to the left of the exhaust manifold looking at it from the front. If you've run the vehicle recently, be very careful as it's likely the exhaust is still very hot. You may need to put a filter wrench over the oil filter and twist it off counter clockwise. Once you have it loosened up, you should be able to remove it the rest of the way by hand. Make sure you have a drain bucket underneath the vehicle to catch all the oil that comes out of the filter. Turn the filter upright and remove it from the top of the motor.
Put some clean oil on the gasket of your new oil filter, be sure that the gasket from the old filter is not stuck onto the engine. You may just have to feel around in this case because it's difficult to see. Then install your new oil filter onto the spindle as tight as you can by hand. Make sure that your hand, the filter, or your glove are all free of oil to make sure that you get it on there as tight as you can. Wipe down any excess oil you can reach before testing the car for leaks.
To keep the mess to a minimum, go ahead and install a funnel into the oil fill and fill the engine with six quarts of the appropriate oil. If you hold the jug sideways, it makes it come out a little more controlled and smoother, and it reduces your risk of spilling.
Remove the oil funnel from the filler, reinstall your cap, start the vehicle and allow it to run for a few seconds to circulate the oil through the engine and filter. Shut it down and allow the oil to drain back into the pan before we check the oil level to make sure that it's right up top.
After you've let the vehicle sit for a moment on flat ground remove the dipstick, wipe it off completely, reinstall it fully into the tube, remove it, and check the level again. As you can see, our level is right up at the top of the hash marks which is right where we want it to be. Below the hash marks means that our engine is down one quart of oil each notch here, displaying one-fifth of a quart until it gets to the top hash mark showing that it's full. If we were down here, we would know we had to add a half of quart of oil to our engine but, ours is right up top so we're good to go.
Turn the key to the run position, which is key on without the engine running, fully depress and release the gas pedal three times nice and smooth. Shut the key off, turn it back on, and your oil life should be reset to 100%.
