Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks!
In this video, we're going to show you how to check and refill the transmission fluid in your 2005 Cadillac CTS.
The items you'll need include a T45 Torx bit, ratchet, and socket extension, a screw-on hand pump, Dextron VI transmission fluid, drain pan, and a jack and jack stands.
To check your transmission fluid, you will have to start the vehicle and let it get up to operating temperature. Once it's at operating temperature—we warmed our vehicle up before taking this video—be sure to have your foot firmly applied the brake. Shift into each gear range and hold it for three seconds. Repeat this process two or three times to allow the transmission fluid to properly cycle through all the valves and solenoids inside, ensuring that the level on our pan is accurate.
With your vehicle raised, supported, and running in the Park position, after going through the steps to cycle the transmission fluid, use a T45 Torx bit and socket extension and a ratchet to remove the drain plug on the back of the transmission. Our transmission fluid is running out with the vehicle running, which means that our level is up and where it needs to be. So we can reinstall our drain plug.
Otherwise, you would install a hose or pump, and fill the transmission fluid until it ran out of the bottom of that hole as you saw there. If you do have to add transmission fluid, you'll use a screw-on hand pump setup like this into your jug of Dextron VI ATF fluid for this particular vehicle. Insert the end of the rubber hose into the fill plug hole and pump the top to pump fluid into the transmission pan.
