How to Pressure Test Vehicle Cooling System

How to use an antifreeze pressure tester and shows where to find potential leaks depending on the location.

  1. step 1 :Pressure Testing the Coolant System
    • Place a drain pan near the suspected leak spot
    • Remove the cap from the overflow bottle
    • Pour coolant into the overflow bottle
    • Insert the coolant pressure tester to the bottle with an adapter
    • Press the pump and do not apply more pressure than what matches the psi labeled on the overflow cap
    • Locate the spot of the leak
    • Follow the drip and find its location
    • If fluid is leaking out of the front, it could be a lower radiator hose or the radiator
    • If fluid is leaking out of the engine block, check the water pump and intake gaskets OR
    • Check the lower and upper radiator hose, hose clamps, or the thermostat
    • If fluid is leaking near the fire wall, check the heater hoses
    • If fluid is leaking near the drain near the firewall, check the heater core
    • If fluid is leaking into the passenger compartment, check the heater core
