Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing or maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20-plus years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly: that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.
In this video, I'm going to show you how to remove as well as replace an inside door handle on this 2001 Chevy Malibu, same as any '97 to '03. I'll show you the driver's side. It's very similar for the passenger's side. Tools you'll need are: a flat blade screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver and 7mm socket with a ratchet and extension.
Take an 8mm wrench, disconnect your negative battery cable. This is more just to protect your battery from running down while you have the door open.
To remove your door panel, you're going to start by carefully prying up your switch plate, you're going to pry out a bezel right there, and then there is a Phillips screw right in behind your door handle.
Once you pry your switch up, there's a bunch of tabs under here. I'm going to use my screwdriver and push on the locking tab, push that down. Same thing with this one, this one comes from the front. Then this one here, same thing, a little locking tab right here, push on it, push up. Disconnect that. You also need to remove this trim panel right here. There's a Phillips screw; remove that. Behind here, two bolts. Those bolts are 7mm. Grab a 7mm and an extension and a ratchet. Use your screwdriver, pry out the front of this panel, pull your handle out, and pull it forward. You can try and unhook this. It's actually easier if you lightly pry the tabs on the bezel. Then pull the switch right out. I usually just start at the front and work your hands down, pop the first clip, keep working your hand down and what fell out there actually are the little clips from my window switch, two of them. Once you have that, it comes up and off. This weather strip came off, you can either put it back on or just keep it off while you do your repair. You have one clip that stayed behind here. Take my clip tool, pull it out, put it right back on, right there. Plug our mirror back in.
