Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you alternator replacement. This is a 2008 Dodge Ram with a 5.7 liter, and it's pretty much the same for this vintage 5.7 liter Hemi V8. You'll need 10 to 15 millimeter sockets or wrenches, a 3/8 drive ratchet, and a flat blade screwdriver.
Before working on any part of the electrical system, you'll want to use a 10 millimeter wrench to remove the negative terminal of your battery, and set if off to the side.
Here's your serpentine belt. Before removing, you'll want to make sure you have the diagram for it. Usually located under the hood, or on the radiator support of you vehicle. Our truck doesn't have one, so we're going to make our own.
Using the drive from a 3/8"? ratchet, you'll insert it into the slot on the tensioner. Remove the tension from the belt. Take it off the pulley.
Remove the safety on the connector on the back of the alternator. Remove the connector. Remove the cover to the power terminal using a 13 millimeter deep socket. Remove the nut and power cable. Remove the two 15 millimeter bolts at the bottom of the alternator. Using a flat head screwdriver, or a small pry bar, work the alternator off of its posts.
To reinstall the alternator line up your bolt holes, and reinstall the two 15 millimeter bolts. Reinstall your power cable, and the 13 millimeter nut. Go ahead and pop the cover back on. Reinstall the two pin connector to the back of the alternator. Slide the safety back on.
Ensure that the rest of your serpentine belt is routed properly. Release the tension from your belt tensioner. Install your belt back on to your alternator pulley. Release the tensioner. If your serpentine belt fell off during the repair, or if you decide to replace your serpentine belt at the same time, here's a quick run through of how to route the belt onto the pulleys properly.
Reinstall your negative battery terminal. Tighten it back with a 10 millimeter socket.
