Hi, I’m Mike from 1A Auto. We’ve been selling auto parts for over 30 years!
Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Use a 10mm nut.
Alternator on this vehicle is here. To remove the belt, there is a 19mm hex on the end of the tensioner there. Going to reach in with a 19mm socket and a long ratchet, or you can use a breaker bar, to push it down. Get the belt off. Just kind of lay the belt aside so it doesn't come off the pulleys.
Disconnect the electrical connector in the alternator by pushing the lock and pulling it off. I'm going to remove this cap. Just pull it back a little bit and move that nut off the side. There's a 10mm nut. This harness is bolted to the alternator there. I'm going to remove the bolt that's holding on the bracket, also 10mm. Put the bolt back in place just for now so it doesn't get lost. Finally, this harness is clipped in here. Use a flat bladed screwdriver and open up the lock, and the harness can be moved out of the way. You'll leave it connected there. If you had to, you could push in the lock and pull it off, but I think we'll have enough room to get the alternator out without moving it.
Loosen the 14mm bolt on the top. Reach in with an extension. The bottom of the alternator, just above the A/C compressor, there's a 12mm bolt. The real short one. A little tricky to see, you kind of have to feel for it. All right, with those bolts loose, just kind of move the harness up just a little bit. This alternator should slide off the side of the engine, and you can lift it out of the engine compartment.
Taking the new alternator, just slide it in the engine compartment under the harness. Line up these ears on the top bracket, and get it to slide right in. The original bolts, get it started. Going to need to wiggle the alternator around to line up the hole. Take the 14mm ratcheting wrench. I'm just going to get it close to being tight. I want to still have a little bit of movement so I can line up the bottom bolt. I'm going to reach underneath, and I'm going to have to move the alternator up and down to get the bottom bolt to line up.
Just using a 12mm ratcheting wrench, thread in the bottom bolt. All right, I just want to snug it up and come back and torque. Just a note, we did have to swap this old bracket to the new alternator. It's just a small 8mm bolt. Just unbolted it, bolted this bracket back on. Top bolt, torque to 38 foot-pounds, and torque the bottom bolts to 16 foot-pounds.
And reinstall this bracket. It's just a small steel bolt going into the aluminum case of the alternator so I'm just going to tighten it to stop. Don't want to go over-tighten it. Attach our main power cable. It's got these little ears, they're going to fit in those little openings there. Tighten this back up, 10mm, I'm just going to go until I feel it get tight. I don't want to snap the stud off. Put the cover back on. You don't want to short this out on anything. Reinstall the plug. Reinstall the harness, clip it back into place. That's all where it needs to be.
Now I have to put the belt back on. Make sure the belt is on. It kind of popped off the power steering pulley, which is way in the back. I'm just going to visually check to make sure it's still on all the pulleys. It is. With that 19mm, pull it down. Reconnect the negative terminal.
