Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace a cabin air filter on this 2003 Honda Odyssey, same as any '99 to '03 Odyssey. This can be, I wouldn't say difficult, but, basically, you do have to cut a piece of plastic out of the dash. If your cabin filter has never been replaced before, it is required that you cut a piece of plastic out of the dash. You'll need either a Dremel tool or a slim blade hacksaw or something like that, and you'll see what I mean later in the video. If your filter has already been replaced, then this has already been done, and you'll see when you get there. Beyond that, you'll just need a Phillips screwdriver, and an eight millimeter socket and ratchet, and a flashlight will help as well.
The cabin air filter is located behind the glove box. What you'll need to do is actually remove your whole glove box. You'll start by just opening it up. Take anything that's inside of it out of it. Then, see right back here, there's little stops. You just need to take, and press with your fingers, little clips that hold them in, so you can press from the outside. You'll lift the box up, press on those little teeth and push out. Lift the box and then just pull that stop out. Do the same thing over here. We're just going to reach on the outside, kind of press those teeth, and push that stop in, and then pull it right out. Now your box will flip down. We actually just want to shut it for right now.
Now, we're going to go under here and there's just a little clip here. Turn it counter-clockwise. It unscrews. Then, this whole kick panel comes off. Then, up underneath, there are two screws. You can either use a Phillips screwdriver or an eight millimeter socket and ratchet. There's one there, and then one on the other side, right in there. I'm just going to fast forward here. I'll use a screwdriver on one side and that bolt comes out pretty easily. Then, on the other side, I'll use my eight millimeter socket with a ratchet and extension, as that bolt was in there a little tighter. I couldn't get it with the screwdriver.
Once you take those out, you can open up your glove box and the whole thing's just going to fall right out. Then, actually, your cabin filter is right here, but this brace is in the way. Actually, believe it or not, on these vehicles, there's a plastic part of the dash that goes right across here. What they do is they cut that out. So, you'll notice, if you still have your manual, your manual tells you to take your car to the dealer to have your cabin air filter replaced, and that's why. Because they don't want to see you cut this piece, or they don't want to see you cut this piece out, but that's what you have to do. Use some type of small Dremel tool or a Sawzall. Carefully cut this piece out. Do not cut this metal brace in here. You are going to want remove an eight millimeter bolt right here. I'm going to fast-forward here. I attempt to take the eight millimeter bolt out, but doesn't quite work. You do have to remove a Phillips screw that's right to the right of it. Remove the Phillips screw, and both the eight millimeter bolt, and then that brace will drop down.At the top of the heater box. There's a clip and you basically pry up on it to remove this plastic door that hides the filter. Voila. There's the cabin air filter. After you pull the filter out, you'll want to go in with a screwdriver or maybe even a vacuum and just get all the stuff that you can out of the heater box.
This is the air flow arrow. It matches up with the air flow on the box. You flip it upside down, as you can see, to match it up. Slide it in and now your air flow here matches your air flow here. Then, you can seal it back up. I'm just going to fast-forward as we kind of button this up just to kind of reverse the procedure. Put the brace back in place, use the eight millimeter bolt to hold the brace, and then the screw that holds that dash trim to the brace. Obviously, you're not going to put the piece of plastic that you cut out if you had to cut that out. Then, put your glove box back in place. Just latch it in place. You can see Jeremy kind of get contorted as he puts the two screws back in the glove box.
Next are the clips that go on the insides of the glove box. Just push them in and they snap right into place. You do the same thing on both sides. Push it in the hole. Snap it in.
