Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace an ECT sensor or commonly known as an engine coolant temperature sensor on a 2002 Volvo V70 non-turbo. It's undamentally the same for 2001 to 2007 V70's and the non-turbo S60's of the same model years. For this repair, you'll need a Torx 30 and 40 socket, a socket wrench, 13mm socket, 3/4 inch open-ended wrench and a drain bucket to catch the coolant and a funnel to help put it back in.
Locate and remove the coolant reservoir bottle cap. Underneath the driver's front side of the radiator, you'll find a plastic hollow bolt which is the coolant drain. Go ahead and use a 13mm socket and socket extension to drain the coolant. After about a half a gallon has come out, go ahead and reinstall the coolant bottle cap to make the coolant stop coming out. Then go ahead, with your 13mm socket and extension, and hand tighten it, not too tight. It is plastic on plastic.
On the right side of the engine, furthest, most to the passenger side, on the top of the valve cover, you're going to find two Torx 30 screws. Go ahead and remove those and I'll fast forward as I do that. Then to get the cover up out of the way, you're going to have two little clips on either side of it, press them out and pull the cover off.
With that cover out of the way, you'll locate the two Torx 40 bolts that hold the thermostat housing on, remove those. With the thermostat housing now free, pull it out of the way and pull your thermostat up and out.
Remove the clip that holds the ECT sensor's wire in place. Disconnect the ECT sensor from the main harness and then from the clip. Use a 3/4 inch wrench to remove the ECT sensor. That is directly below the thermostat housing. Install your ECT sensor with the copper gasket and then tighten it up with your 3/4 inch wrench and I'll fast forward as I do that. Plug the ECT sensor back into the harness and then clip the harness onto its bracket.
Install the thermostat and then the thermostat housing and upper hose. Go ahead and reinstall the Torx 40 bolts. I'll go ahead and fast forward as I tighten those up.
Install the plastic cover and tighten up your two Torx 30 bolts.
Use a funnel with a screen to catch any debris that's going to go into your coolant reservoir. Go ahead and refill your coolant, and I will fast forward as I finish that up.
