Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace a door mounted speaker on this 2001 Volkswagen Beetle. We show you on the driver's side, but the passenger side is the same procedure. The items you'll need for this are a flat blade screwdriver, a T20 Torx driver, a Phillips screwdriver, a drill, a 3/8 inch drill bit, a hammer, and a punch.
Start off by prying off this panel on your pull handle. Behind that, there are two Phillips screws. Just go ahead and remove both of those. At the bottom of the door panel there are three T20 Torx bolts. We'll go ahead and remove those three. Now you want to just pull out on the panel, just around the edges. Any screws that you loosened up all the way, but wouldn't pull out entirely, they will fall out now, so just keep an eye on where they go. When all the clips are free except the top of the door panel, you just want to reach up here and pull it out of the track and pull it forward. On the back of your door panel, you'll see a bunch of harnesses. Just push the tab and pull the harnesses free. Then, for your door handle cable, just pull it out of the bracket and then unhook it. Just disconnect this harness for your door lock. For these two larger harnesses down here, you just want to pry them free with a flat blade screwdriver. Then just push the tab on this harness and disconnect your courtesy light.
Lining your speaker are four rivets, but before we remove those, you want to just push the tabs on either side of the harness and pull it up and out. Then, remove this ring. Then, using a drill and a 3/8 inch drill bit, just drill out the rivets. You're really only drilling out the top of them, and we'll show you what to do with the bottom of them after this. Pry the speaker out. It'll just pull free. Now, using a hammer and a punch, just knock out the rest of the rivets.
Take your new speaker. Put it into place, and put a rivet into place. Then using a rivet gun just pump the rivet gun until it breaks free. Do that three more times. Then replace this ring and reconnect your harness.
To reinstall your door panel just reconnect each of those harnesses. Then re-clip your door handle cable and just push it back into that bracket. Make sure you reconnect your courtesy light. Now put the door panel back into the track. Then just push it down. Then just hit in the clips around the edge of the door panel, and then replace those three T20 screws and the two Phillips screws in the pull handle. Just replace that panel and hit it into place and you're all set.
