Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video we're going to show you how to remove and put back in your drive shaft on this '66 GTO. This procedure is the same for a whole ton of GM vehicles from the '50s all the way up through the '80s and '90s. On this vehicle you just need a half inch wrench. You do need to jack up your vehicle. If you have the rear wheels on the ground, you must make sure that they are blocked and we'll get on with it.
These are half inch bolts. We'll hit fast forward here as we just loosen up and remove those half inch nuts off the end of the U-yokes. What you can do is take your wrench and put it in here and you can just push it forward a little bit. These yokes come out, and there go my washers. You can push it back in just until you're ready.
Pull the shaft forward, pull it out of the rear end. You want to have a catch pan underneath because when you pull this out . when you pull the drive shaft out of the transmission you're probably going to get fluid leaking out. We didn't on this vehicle either because we had it nice and level or probably more likely that the transmission was a little low on fluid. If your car is pitched up at all and most likely when you have an automatic transmission you're going to get fluid that leaks out of there so you want to have a catch pan. You'll see I have an extra yoke to stick back in there. I have an extra yoke that I can put up in there.
Now, to reinstall the drive shaft there's no particular position it has to go, on this vehicle. Just put it up in there. You see I'm twisting it too a little bit to get the teeth to mesh and they open to the transmission. Then you push it all the way into the transmission and then I'm lifting it back up into the rear end, turning it a little bit to line up the U joint with the yoke on the transmission, and then carefully pushing that back in the transmission, and making sure that it's correctly seated into the yoke.
Now I install one of the U-clamps on the left side and then the right side have a little bit of trouble just because of the angle that the drive shafts at. You'll see I turn it one way. It doesn't really help, so then, I turn it back the other way and it goes in. We'll just speed up as I'm just hand threading those nuts onto the back of the U clamps. You can see here, I've got the top one in seated pretty well. This one's not quite in yet so I need to just slowly tighten up these and make sure that pulls in nice and smooth. What I'm doing here is I rotate it so that the yokes are on each side and then slowly just tighten up that one a little bit, try and push it in there first. Use the wrench and you should never be forcing this. If you're just tightening it lightly and it's pulling it in that's what you want. I make sure that that sides pulling in and then I'll turn my attention to the other side, make sure that's pulling in correctly and ideally, the more you can tighten these by hand the better. That way you know they're pulling in nice and evenly.
We'll just speed it up here as I slowly tighten those switching from side to side just to make sure that the U joint is pulling into the axle yoke nice and evenly. When it comes to these things they don't have to be super tight. I'm just pulling them with this combination wrench.
