How to Replace Exterior Door Handls 1990-94 Chevy Lumina

1A Auto shows you installation instruction tutorial to replace a broken door handle on a Chevy Lumina. This process is the same for 4 door Lumina and Corsica years 1990-1994.

step 1 :Removing the Door Panel
- Remove the screws from the door panel
- Pry off the lower door panel with a putty knife
- Pry off the window switch with a putty knife
- Disconnect the window switch wiring harnesses
- Pry off the inner door handle with a putty knife
- Disconnect the door handle
- Pry off the door panel with a putty knife
- Pull the door panel up and off
- Remove the bolts from the seat belt
- Remove the bolts from the door panel bracket
- Pull off the door panel bracket
- Disconnect the seat belt
- Pull the seat belt aside
- Peel back the water shield

step 2 :Removing the Outside Door Handle
- Connect the window switch wiring harnesses
- Pry off the access hole plug with a flat blade screwdriver
- Remove the two 10mm bolts from the outside door handle
- Unclip the latch rod
- Pull out the latch rod
- Pull out the door handle

step 3 :Installing the New Outside Door Handle
- Hold the latch rod in place
- Attach the door handle to the latch rod
- Push the new handle into place
- Clip on the latch rod
- Insert the two 10mm bolts into the door handle
- Test the door handle
- Push on the access hole plug

step 4 :Reinstalling the Door Panel
- Disconnect the window switch wiring harnesses
- Put the water shield into place
- Connect the seat belt
- Push on the door panel bracket
- Insert the bolts into the door panel bracket
- Put the seat belt into place
- Insert the bolts into the seat belt
- Lift the door panel into place
- Push in the door panel clips
- Connect the inside door handle
- Push the door handle into place
- Connect the window switch wiring harnesses
- Push the window switch into place
- Push the lower door pane into place
- Insert the screws into the door panel

In this video, we'll be replacing a door handle on this 1992 Chevy Lumina four-door, the same as any '87 to '94 Corsica or '90 to '94 Lumina. It's really not a difficult replacement, but you do need a few tools: screwdrivers, putty knife or door panel clip tool, a 5/64 inch Allen wrench, a 15 millimeter socket and ratchet, a 7 millimeter wrench or socket and driver, needle nose pliers and a 10 millimeter socket and ratchet.
I'm just going to speed through taking the door panel off. If you want to see this video in real-time, we do have the removing Lumina door panels in our other videos, and also as a reply to this video. Most likely, you can pick up what you need to pick up here. You remove some screws. You remove some clips, and then the door panel comes off. Then you'll need to pull of your water shield, and the seatbelt and stuff. Bear with us for another minute. It will give you some clues. To replace your outside door handle, first you want to make sure the window is all the way up. Next, you're going to want to open upt this little access hole, here. Then you're going to easily access two 10 millimeter bolts that hold the handle on. I've removed the bolts from the door handle. Now I'm going inside the door here. That blue clip, right there, you basically just want to put your finger on and just knock to the side. Then this pulls right out. Then this rod comes down and out. Once that rod is disconnected, the handle just comes right out.
Here, you can see this is the old handle and the new handle from 1A Auto. On the new handles, everything is the same. Ours is even beefed up a little bit in some places. It's going to look great going on there. To reinstall the handle, it's kind of fun. You want to take the rod, and with one hand reach in the door. You want to have the rod -- it's got to be in behind here. You hold that rod up, and slip it into the door handle, and then put the door handle in. Put the door handle in, and then into the holes. At the same time, you're holding the rod up, and pushing under there, and then locking it. When you put the nuts back on for this rear one, you'll probably need to use an extension. You've got to go in there, pretty much right there. Make sure the door handle looks the way you want on the outside of the car. Tighten the bolts. They don't have to be super-tight, though. That works. Then make sure you put your little access hole plug back in. There you go.
