In this video we're going to be working with our 2001 Ford Ranger 4.0 Liter V6. We're going to show you how to remove and replace the fuel filter. This information pertains to vehicles produced before May of 2001. If you like this video, please click subscribe. We have a ton more information on this truck as well as many other makes and models. If you ever need parts for your vehicle, you can follow the link down in the description over to 1AAuto.com. Here are the items you'll need for this repair.
Remove the underhood fuse panel cover. It lifts up. You’ve got to work it out from under the fender there. Remove the relay at the back of the fuse here. This is location 50B on the bottom of your fuse panel cover right here. With the fuel pump relay disconnected, we'll start the vehicle, allow it to run until it dies from running out of fuel, and crank it a few more times to make sure there's no more pressure in our fuel lines. Perfect.
Your fuel filter is located on the frame rail just behind the transfer case on this four wheel drive model. Otherwise, it's in about the center of the door section. Before performing any work on the fuel filter, be sure you have a drain bucket underneath and that you're wearing the proper safety equipment in case fuel spills or sprays onto you or anything around you. On the outside of our frame rail is a 13mm nut, which we'll remove with a socket and ratchet. With the nut removed, you can pull your fuel filter away from the frame rail. Press down on the colored tabs. It helps to use a flat blade screwdriver. This will also get you a little bit farther away from it in case any fuel does spray. With that tab depressed, remove the connection. Using a flat blade screwdriver, pry up and release the tab on the outlet side of the fuel filter and remove the filter from that line. Remove your fuel filter and place it into your drain bucket.
Remove the caps on the new fuel filter. Insert it into the forward hose first. Push down on that connector. If it's still popped up, make sure it locks in. Orange hose goes on the skinnier pipe closer to the frame rail and green on the larger pipe closer to you. Make sure that both of those have locked in securely as well. Line up the tab and insert the stud on the fuel filter through the frame rail. Reinstall the 13mm nut. Tighten it down with a socket and ratchet.
Reinstall the fuel pump relay into its appropriate socket. Reinstall the fuse panel cover. We're going to have to reprime our fuel system. To do this we'll turn the key on, wait for the fuel pump to shut off, turn the key off, and repeat the process three times before attempting to crank the vehicle.
