Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks!
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the fuel pump and sending unit module on this 2002 Ford Escape. It's the same part and similar process on these Escapes from 2001 to 2004. The items you'll need for this are a new pump and sending unit from www.1AAuto.com, Phillips screwdriver, pliers, flat blade screwdriver, vacuum, and a rubber mallet. We recommend that you have an assistant that's equipped with a large flat blade screwdriver and a rubber mallet as well.
If when you start your truck it doesn't turn over and you don't hear the fuel pump running, it's likely that the fuel pump has gone bad. Using a pair of pliers pull out this 20 amp fuse, and remove this relay right here. Lift up firmly on the seat. Then just pull it forward and tilt it out. Then lift up this panel and remove these four Phillips screws. We'll just fast-forward as Mike does that. Now lift up this panel and just disconnect these harnesses. The two higher-up ones are pretty easy. You just push the tab on them and pull them free. Then for this lower one, you want to use a flat blade screwdriver and just pry up on this tab. Then it will pull free. Push this tab through, and then push this grommet through. Then just set that aside.
Vacuum out the area. When it's as clean as you can get it, just push on the tabs and pull these houses free. Set those aside. Use a small screwdriver and carefully push out on these tabs to get these off. Put them back into the lines. We'll fast-forward here as he does the other one.
Now what we're going to do is get a helper. One screwdriver over there, we're using rubber mallets so we're not hitting this hard. Then we're just going to try and tap at the same time to break the ring free. There is a special wrench you're supposed to use, but we find that works pretty well.
Once you've loosened it up, you can just remove ring the rest of the way by hand. You just want to lift that ring up and out. Lift the fuel pump and sending unit up. You want to pull it up out of the fuel, and just let it drain a little bit. Then lift it up and out.
There are two tabs that make sure you align it. There's a larger one here. You can see the indent there and there. Put the casket on. We're just going to fast-forward here as he just pushes it down and into the tank making sure none of the harnesses or hoses get caught underneath it and that that gasket stays up along the top. Then take that ring and fit it down over the fuel pump and sending unit. Just twist it into place. We'll just fast-forward as Mike twists this in as far as he can by hand. Then to tighten it up, you just want to repeat the process you used to loosen it but in the opposite direction.
Reconnect your fuel lines, making sure those packing caps are off. Then reconnect your harnesses. Make sure they're tucked down and in, and then fit that panel back down, and push that grommet through. Then we'll just fast-forward as Mike replaces those four Phillips screws. Push that clip on the harness back in. Make sure the carpet is out from underneath the metal panel, and flip this panel down. Then you can put your seat back into place. Just make sure all your seatbelts are up and over it. Then just push it firmly back down into place. Replace your fuel pump relay and fuel pump fuse. Then you're all set.
