In this video, we're going to be working with our 2001 Ford Ranger. We're going to show you how to remove and replace your general electric multi-function, or GEM module. This module controls everything from wiper speed to automatic windows, heated mirrors if you have them, and all sorts of other electrical components in your truck.

Here are the items you'll need for this repair: 7mm socket, ratchet, socket extension, flat blade screwdriver
Remove the two seven millimeter screws in the center trim bezel below the radio. We use a small flat blade screwdriver with some tape on it to keep from marring our dash surface. Pry out on the center trim panel. Reach back and disconnect all of the electrical connectors. The antenna pops right back and out. This last connector for the four wheel drive selector is going to have to be pried up on with our flat blade screwdriver. Using a seven millimeter socket and ratchet, remove the screw at the back of the heater vent. Reach into the top of the vent, push up on the plastic, and then remove the vent.
Disconnect the electrical connectors from the bottom of the module. Set them off to the side and remove the seven millimeter bolt at the bottom of the bracket for the module here, with a socket and ratchet. With the bracket unbolted, slide the module down and remove it from the vehicle.
There are slots on the back of the GEM module that slide onto these tabs. Line those up, push it up into place, and reinstall the seven millimeter screw at the bottom of the bracket. Reconnect the electrical connectors.
Ours had the grey connector in the back and the black connector at the front. Reinstall the vent, hooking the top edge in first. Give it a couple pulls there to make sure that it actually locked into place so you don't have that rattling around when you turn your heat on. We'll use a long extension on our ratchet, as well as seven millimeter socket to reinstall the screw at the bottom of that vent. Reconnect the four wheel drive selector connector. Reconnect the cigarette lighter. Two wires there.
Reconnect the radio harness, the antenna, the fog light switch, and the A/C power outlet connector. Push the center panel back into place. Then reinstall the two seven millimeter screws at the bottom of the panel.
