Here is have the key fob to our 2001 Ford Ranger. We're going to show you how to open it up and change out the battery, in case the battery in here has died and prevented you from getting into the vehicle. Now, you can tell these are pretty universal because this one has a button to release the trunk, which obviously our truck doesn't have, so this is going to work for a wide variety of Fords, specifically the mid to late ‘90s and early 2000s.
We'll start by removing it from its keyring. You can see where the loop for the key-ring is, is a little bit wider than the rest of the fob. That's so you can stick a small flat blade screwdriver in there, spread that open, and split it apart. Be sure to keep the button side down so none of those fall out of place. The battery will then slide forward out of its retainer.
This is a CR 20 32. This is the watch-style flat battery. The tapered end is going to be the one that faces down into the key fob. Slide that new battery right back in there. Make sure it's seated in there properly and that it's in there good and tight. Line up the back half of the key fob, snap that all back together nice and tight. Make sure that seam closed all the way around, at which point we can re-install it onto our keyring. It's a little difficult to do with just your fingernail going back together to you might just want to spread that open with the small flat blade, and you're good to go.
