How to replace a broken, damaged or burnt out license plate lenses to the 08 Honda Civic
10mm Socket
Ratchet
Needle nose pliers
Hi, I’m Mike from 1A Auto. We’ve been selling auto parts for over 30 years!
To remove the license plate light trim, we'll go inside your trunk. There are these white push clips that will have to be pushed out. There's one that's hidden up here, behind the sheet metal. There's one 10mm bolt, and then another push clip over there. I'm going to start by removing this 10mm bolt with a socket ratchet. This bolt broke. It just goes in the plastic. For some reason, it corroded in there, it broke. I'm going to try to remove it without having to take that bolt out. I'm going to reach up with some needle nose pliers and undo these white clips. They're right up in here. Push it up. Get it in, and I'm actually going to need to unplug these lights. Push them in. Pull them out. A little extra space to get in here. I'm going to use my pliers to squeeze these locks in. Push that up. Move the other one. Now, we'll lift up the outside. I've got all these clips loose. I pull it out. All these clips are loose, and I can see where that one that broke. I can lift this off.
This is our bolt that seized in there and rusted. If you live in an area that doesn't get very rusty, and this comes right out. You can reinstall it, but since ours is broken, I'm going to take it off. Spray a little rust penetrant in there. These, one, two, three, four, these five clips are plenty enough to hold that trim on. The bolt's just kind of extra from the factory, so we'll be just fine without it. Take some locking pliers. Adjust them. Lock in there. Go underneath with my 10mm socket and work on breaking this free.
To replace your license plate light bulb lenses, with this cover off, you can lift up, go inside the trunk, and there is a tab on both of these. This side's a little easier to get to, but it's on the same side over here. It's easier to show on this one. You'll push in on the tab; at the same time, push up. That kind of popped out, so the seal might be kind of tight, but it will lift out of the trunk lid this way.
Then to reinstall it, kind of start it on this side. Slide it underneath the sheet metal. Get this gasket lined up, and then push that down in place. It'll snap into place. Identical for this one here. We'll take our trunk trim piece. We're missing this bolt. We're not going to put it back in. These clips are in good shape, so I'm just going to push them up in the same spots they came out of. Push it right down. It's held in place just fine.
