In this video we're going to show you how to replace the rear hatch struts on this 2004 Grand Cherokee. Same as any '99 to '04. The only tools you'll need, you do need a T40 Torx bit with a ratchet and an extension. Then to put our new ones in you'll need a 13 mm socket.

Over time these cylinders wear out causing your tailgate to sag. Actually you can see that they're still good on this one, but some people are probably familiar with a piece of wood or broom or something that holds the tailgate up. It's annoying when you reach for your favorite swimming toy and you get hit in the head with the tailgate. In all seriousness this can be a very dangerous situation for a small child or something. Replacing these struts is pretty easy. Even though this vehicle doesn't need them I'm going to show you how to take them off and put them back on. Most basic tools sets will have 3/8 ratchet and sometimes an extension. Probably the one different tool; this is T40 Torx bit. Next you want to take your Torx driver and insert it about here on the bottom; then on the top, same thing right in there. I'm going to fast forward through removing those two bolts.

I highly recommend having someone help you here. You can see I reach up just to make sure the tailgate doesn't go anywhere. Make sure then that that weight rests onto the board. Best if you have a helper to help you out when you're removing this. New ones from 1A Auto. They come with little studs. They're a little different than the originals. You put those into place with the original Torx screws down here and on top up here. Then use a 13mm socket to tighten them up, or a wrench would work fine. Then you want to install these with the skinny side down. They install very easily. You put them onto the socket and press. Then up here you'll need to probably lift up your tailgate some. Put them on the socket and press and then they're on there nice and tight. You can replace the other side the same way and then you'll be able to reach your favorite swimming toy or your favorite gardening hat without getting hit by it.
