How to Replace MAF Sensor 1996-98 GMC K1500 V8 5-7L Sierra

In this video we're going to be working with our 1996 GMC Sierra K1500 5.7-liter Vortec V8. We're going to show you how to remove and replace your vehicle's mass air flow (MAF) sensor. This is an important part of your vehicle gaging the air coming into the engine so it can get a proper mixture and a good strong burn.

Here are the items you'll need for this repair: new sensor, flat blade screwdriver

Your mass air flow sensor or MAF sensor is located here between your air box and the intake tube running up to your throttle body on the top of the engine. To remove this, we'll undo the electrical connector and the two hose clamps. You can't really see the end on this one. It's down back, but we'll loosen both of those with a flat blade screwdriver. You don't have to take these all the way off. Just get them loose enough that you can remove them from the sensor. Now ours has been on here for quite a while it looks like, so you're probably going to need to work the tube a little bit to get it to come off. Remove your mass air flow sensor from the vehicle.

Here we have our old mass air flow sensor, or MAF sensor, that we removed from our vehicle, and our new part from 1AAuto.com. As you can see, there are some pretty serious aesthetic differences here. However, this sensor will go in direct fit and work perfectly fine because it comes with this adapter harness here. General Motors, the GMC and Chevy vehicles, are very, very generalized, meaning that the parts are not super-specific.

Here you can see we have this three-wire adapter harness coming out here that's going to plug into our factory MAF connector, just like the one we have here. There are two dead pins here that are in this sensor, but assume these are for the intake air temp sensor, which is a separate sensor on our vehicle and thus unnecessary when installing this part, even though the mass air flow sensor is going to work the same.

Your MAF sensor gages the mass of air coming into the intake so your vehicle can properly adjust fuel trim and ignition settings to get a good clean burn to get maximum power and efficiency out of your engine. A bad MAF sensor can cause a rough idle and drivability issues from the vehicle not getting the proper air-fuel ratio or not getting the right combustion inside of the cylinder. If your sensor has gone bad or you have a check engine light for a bad MAF sensor, this new part from 1A Auto will go in direct fit, just like our original equipment, and fix you up right.

You'll notice that there's an arrow on the body of the sensor and on the sensor itself. This shows the direction of airflow, meaning it's going to come in from our intake at the air filter and go through to our throttle body. We'll put this adapter back on that fell off of our old MAF sensor and reinstall it into our vehicle. Once the intake boots are back on the sensor, tighten down the hose clamps with your flat blade screwdriver. Once everything's tightened down, plug the connector into the adapter harness supplied with your part. Clear any check engine lights in the vehicle if you can, and you're good to go.
