Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing and maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20+ years' experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly, that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.
In this video we're going to be replacing the rear view mirror on this '99 Grand Am two-door; same process for a four door and also the same process for many GM cars that share this platform such as Alero even Malibu and Cutlass. Tools you'll need are all pretty basic: flat blade screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, a putty knife or door panel clip tool, a rag to protect your paint, and a 10mm socket ratchet and extension.
If you only have a manual mirror, you can just remove this cover here, and then there's three bolts and if you have a mirror you can just undo those bolts and then pull the mirror off and put the new one on. This is a power mirror so I'm going to have to remove the door panel in order to get to the connection.
We're going to go through the door panel removal 5x speed. If you want to see this real time regular motion, just check our other videos for door panel removal and you can see it there. It's pretty easy, pretty straightforward. You remove a couple of the trim panels, take out four screws, release the clips that are around the perimeter and then pull it up and off. You'll probably pick up enough from this fast motion to do it, but again if you want to see it in regular motion check out our other videos. Just bear with it for another few seconds here and we'll get to the rest of the mirror.
There's three 10mm bolts right here. I usually take the bottom two off first. Put your hand underneath so you don't accidentally drop them down into the door. Then when I undo the last one I keep a hand on the mirror. Usually they kind of stick on there, and then your mirror comes off.
Here's the original mirror for the car. Here's the new mirror from 1A Auto. You can see it's going to bolt up all the same. The connections here are exactly the same so it's going to plug in with no problem. Obviously, one big difference is the new mirror comes in black. If your car is older and you're just looking to pass inspection maybe that's OK with you. If you want to paint it to match what you're going to want to do is go to an automotive store, an auto parts store that has a paint department and you can just drive your car over there and they'll find out what the paint color is for you, and then they can mix you up some paint and put it into an air-charged spray can and you can paint the mirror to match yourself. Tape off the glass and paint it to match if that's what you want to do.
Installation is basically the same. Feed the wire through. Get the studs lined up and hold it on with this hand. Put the top nut back on. Uh oh. That's what you want to avoid doing. Put that top nut back on. Let's hope it doesn't go too far. It's gone down into my door here. I think it's gone down in the door. Well, anyway if you can find that. Then when you tighten these you want to be firm but not crazy tight. The mirror is plastic. You just want to make sure that they're all three of kind of uniform tightness and you're not pinching your wire at all.
So now we'll, wrong one, reconnect the mirror there and we can put our door panel back on right after I find that bolt and put it back on. At this point now it's just a matter of putting the door back together. We're going to go through it on this video in 5x speed. If you wanted to see this part in regular motion, you can check out our other videos and see it in regular speed.
We really hope that this helps you out. The door handle is available at 1AAtuo.com. We've got great parts and we've got the knowledge to go behind it so we hope you give us a shot at your business and good luck. Thank you very much.
