Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace a broken mirror glass. This is a 1998 Toyota Camry, but this part is basically the same for the ‘95 to ‘98 Camry, as well as ‘95 to ‘99 Avalon.
You'll need new mirror glass from 1AAuto.com, pick tool, glass- and adhesive-safe cleaners, paper towels, and gloves.
Broken mirror glass is a very common problem. It can be dangerous where it can play tricks on the way you see the cars surrounding you and the things behind and on the sides of your vehicle. Fortunately, mirror glass is fairly straightforward to replace without having to buy a complete new mirror assembly.
Behind your mirror glass are these two hooks on the outside. Use a pick. Lift the hooks up, and remove them from the tabs. Pull down on the top one. Push them up to release the surrounding hooks on the mirror. Once the hooks have been released, pop the mirror out of the housing.
Here, we have our old mirror, which we removed from the vehicle and our replacement glass piece from 1AAuto.com. As you can see, the new piece is reflective on both sides, meaning that we can use it as a driver's, in our case, or passenger's side, if needed. Having a replacement glass available is nice, because we can remove our old broken pieces of glass from our old mirror, clean it up, and use the double-sided tape included with our kit to adhere a new piece of glass to the old backing. This means we can reuse our factory mirror with the color already matching, as opposed to buying a paint to match mirror, which requires time off the vehicle, prep work, and a little more money and hassle. Replacing your glass can easily be done at home and get your vehicle safe again.
Wearing some thick gloves to protect yourself, you're going to want to remove all of the old shards of glass from your mirror. I placed a paper towel underneath it so any smaller shards that come out will be easy to clean. If they're really stuck in there, you can use a small screwdriver or a pick. In our case, we broke into some pretty big pieces here. We can just remove them by hand. We can go ahead and remove our broken glass from our work area.
Clean off the back of the mirror with some glass cleaner and a clean, low-lint paper towel. Use some adhesive safe and plastic safe cleaner to clean the dirt and grime out of the back of the housing. Allow that to dry.
Using the double-sided tape supplied with your new mirror, place it as far apart as you can while still making good contact with the backing. The reason we do this is the old mirror is form fit into this housing, and our new mirror is actually a hair smaller to make it easier to install. We will remove the backing. When we press our mirror in, it will fill the edges nicely while still keeping our mirror secure.Center your mirror as best you can. Line it up. Carefully snap your mirror down to the housing. Put some pressure over where your double-sided tape is. Make sure that the mirror is not rattling around in the housing. Clean it off and reinstall it into the vehicle.
Reinstall the metal retainers into the back. Make sure that all of these loops are set into their slots in the plastic. We'll then line these up with the ridges on our mirror motor and press it on. Place your spring retainers over the ribs on the motor. Press firmly on the center of the glass until it stops. Our mirror is reconnected to the motor. Get in and reposition your mirrors so you can see. You're good to go.
