Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and the next time you need a part for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.

In this video, we're going to show you how to remove and reinstall the power steering belt on this 2005 Hyundai Elantra with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. It's pretty much the same for any Elantra from 2001 to 2006. The tools you'll need are 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm wrenches or a socket and ratchet.

Use the 10mm socket wrench to remove the negative cable from the battery. Set that aside. I've located the 12mm bolt that holds the adjuster on the alternator and slack off that. Using a pipe for extra leverage, I've located the lower nut for the alternator right here, right next to the oil filter. This is my 12mm. A wrench for my pipe for extra leverage. Now taking the tension off the adjuster, the 12mm wrench. With my tensioner loose, I can push the alternator forward and sneak the belt off.

I've located the bolt from the power steering pump, it's a 14mm and I use a wrench. You can always use the open wrench. I've located the lower power steering bolt, and I'm going to use a 14mm socket with an extension to get to this. Like the upper one, just loosen it up. You'll see now that the pump is loose. I'm going to lock the belts off.

I'm going to put the belt back on. I'm going to feed it over the water pump pulley back on to the back side. Wrench up the ribs. We're making sure that is fully seated on that pulley, because if it's not, it's going to knock on easily and I'm going to lock it on. I'm slowly turning and applying pressure to test it. Spin it nicely. I'm going to use a breaker bar here and place it between the top bolt on the power steering pump and the engine bracket. Apply pressure until the belt is tight. It should be a little bit of resistance. Snug this top bolt back up. Snug the bottom.

Next, here, I'm going to take off the splash shield that's behind the passenger's front tire. This just allows you to get to the alternator belt to get it back on a little easier. You don't have to do this. You can try to feed the alternator belt down from the top, but usually it's a little easier to feed it in this way. Put the alternator belt back up. Let me get it on the top pulley first and around the alternator and around the crank. I'm going to fast-forward here slightly.

The belt is back on, and now we're re-tightening that tensioner. And you basically want to tighten it up until you can grab the belt between the pulleys, and you should be able to move the belt up and down between an 8th and a quarter of an inch actually closer to an 8th of an inch. Once it's that tight, then you can use your 12mm and tighten the bolt that's on the back of the tensioner. That goes in to the alternator. I'm tightening up the lower nut on the alternator. Then reconnect the battery.
