How to Replace Power Steering Pump 1996-2000 Honda Civic

step 1 :Removing the Power Steering Pump
- Remove the two 10mm bolts from the top of the steering pump
- Place a drip pan underneath
- Remove the hose
- Place a rag over the holes
- Loosen the hose clamp with pliers
- Disconnect the hose and clean the hole with a rag
- Loosen the 12mm bolt from the top of the power steering pump
- Remove the 12mm bolt from the bottom of the power steering pump
- Pull the belt off the power steering pulley
- Remove the 12mm bolt from the top of the power steering pump
- Remove the power steering pump

step 2 :Preparing the Power Steering Pump
- Place a screwdriver through a hole in the pulley
- Use a 19mm socket and ratchet to break nut
- Put the old pulley on the new power steering pump
- Tighten the 19mm nut

step 3 :Installing the New Power Steering Pump
- Lower the power steering pump into place
- Insert and tighten the 12mm bolt from the top of the power steering pump
- Do not tighten the bolt too tight
- Insert and tighten the 12mm bolt from the bottom of the power steering pump
- Pull the power steering pump forward
- Place the belt on the pulley
- Insert a 1/4 inch ratchet into the square hole
- Push the ratchet back to put tension on the belt
- Tighten the 12mm bolts till the belt can move 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch up and down
- Reconnect the hose
- Slide the clamp into place with pliers
- Reconnect the hose
- Replace the two 10mm bolts

step 4 :Replacing the Power Steering Fluid
- Replace the power steering fluid till the fill line with Honda Synthetic Power Steering Fluid
- Start the vehicle with the cap off
- Turn the wheels back and forth
- Check the power steering fluid level
- Check the power steering after a few times driving the vehicle

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the power steering pump on this 1998 Honda Civic with the 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine. It's the same part and process on these Civics from 1996 to 2000. The items you'll need include a new power steering pump from 1AAuto.com, 10mm and 12mm sockets, and a ratchet, a 1/2 inch ratchet, a pair of pliers, a drip pan, a rag, and power steering fluid.
At the top of your power steering pump, there are two 10mm bolts. Go ahead and remove those. Before disconnecting that hose, make sure you have a rag ready, and a drip pan underneath. Just put the rag down over that hole just to stop it from flowing out. Use a pair of pliers. pull up that hose clamp, and disconnect this host. Again, make sure the drip pan is underneath there, and use the same rag to clean up that area as well.
Now, you want to loosen this 12mm bolt at the top of your power steering pump. Remove this 12mm bolt down here at the bottom of the power steering pump. Once that bolt's removed, pull your belt off your power steering pulley and remove that 12 mm bolt from the top of the pump. Once that's out, your power steering pump will lift up and out.
On the left is the old part; on the right is the new part from 1AAuto.com. They're identical, and will fit exactly the same. We do have to switch the pulley over, so put a screw driver through the hold in the pulley and lock it into place using a 19mm socket and ratchet to break the bolt or the nut loose.
You can just put your old pulley onto your new power steering pump, or you can buy a new pulley from 1AAuto.com and put that onto the power steering pump. We're just going to go ahead and do that. You want to replace that nut and tighten it up.
Lower your power steering pump back into place and replace the 12 mm bolt. You want to tighten it up, but not too much that the pump actually stops moving because you still want it to be able to swing back and forth. Do the exact same thing with the lower bolt.
Now, push your power steering pump forward and put your belt onto the pulley. Insert a 1/2 inch ratchet into the square and push it back to put tension on the belt. Then tighten up those two 12mm bolts. The correct amount of tension on the belt is basically enough so that when you grab the belt and move it up and down, you can only move it about an eighth to a fourth of an inch up and down.
Next, reconnect that hose, and with your pliers slide the clamp back down into place. Then reconnect that other hose and replace those two 10mm bolts. We'll just fast-forward here as Don tightens those up.
Now, replace the power steering fluid. Just fill it to the fill line inside and use Honda Synthetic Power Steering Fluid. Now with the cap off, start your vehicle, and then turn the wheels back and forth. Then, once you've done this a couple times, you need to check the power steering fluid and make sure it's still in the right spot. It's advisable just to check the power steering fluid a couple of times the first few times you drive the car.
