Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace a rear quarter window on our truck. The rear quarter window was broken, and somebody tried to get into the vehicle. Tools you'll need for this 4Runner are a flat blade screwdriver, both a regular and smaller size, Phillips screwdriver, a door panel clip tool or a putty knife would work as well, and then a 10mm socket with a ratchet and extension.
Okay, so unfortunately this happens a little too often on these vehicles. Somebody felt they had to get into this car bad enough, so they broke the rear window here. To remove your door panel, pry up on your window switch. Then there's a little tab here, remove that. Pry up on your arm rest as well. Put the screwdriver in under there, it comes up and off. Remove the Phillips screw here.
On the back, there's a little tab. Just push it in with your screwdriver. Pull that clip out. There's one on the front as well. Now you can go around the edges with the door panel clip tool. Get it in behind. Now you want to push your door handle forward, bring it out. There's a little clip back here. Undo the clip and break it off. I'm going to speed up, you want to carefully remove your water shield, although I am going through it in fast forward. Do this carefully, you want to try not to rip it or tear it, and you want to try and stretch it as little as possible.
Here you can see I removed the four Phillips screws that hold the speaker in place and take the speaker off. I'm actually not even sure if that was necessary, but I did it because sometimes you have to reach through that hole to release the window from the window regulator. Then just finish up removing the water shield.
Plug your switch back in to bring your window down a little bit. We're going to unplug the lead for the window motor, which is right here. Press on the little tab up here. Remove that. Just use our screwdriver and pry out the door clip here. 10mm socket and ratchet, we're going to remove the four bolts that hold the window regulator. Removing this last one hold onto your window. There's the regulator, take it, and slide it down some. Slide the regulator out. Hold it up and out.
You can push this little plastic out so you can get it with your 10mm wrench. Remove this bolt in here. Remove this bolt up here. Now you need to pull off this rubber gasket carefully and clean all this glass out of it. Next, we're going to take and pull this weatherstrip out. Then you can see right up in there, there's two Phillip's screws. We're going to remove those. Then you can just move the bar out of the way.
Here I'm just removing those screws. They are very small, so be careful. They will try and fall out on you. Just make sure you don't lose them. Once you have those, then you just pull that bar out of the way. Now we've got our new window here, so we're going to put it up in the corner first here, then we're kind of pressing it in from the inside. Just bring it right around and install it into the weatherstrip.
The little corner here goes underneath this molding, so just put it in just like that. Make sure it's in correctly here and rotate it back into place. Make sure this weatherstrip all goes in properly. Now you're going to want to take this track and reach in through here, and you basically just want to pull your window. Make sure the front of your window is in the track in the front, and then just pull your window right over and get it in this track back here. Then make sure that this slides up into place.
Make sure this whole thing is in the right spot. Slide it up into place and then insert your screws. Make sure that your gasket is all tight in there. Stick this one on. Here, I'm just starting that lower bolt that holds the track that goes in the little hole. I just put it into my extension and started on with my extension. Now I start the second screw in at the top, tighten that up, and then I'll tighten up the two lower track bolts. Here I lift the window up, and then I put the regulator into place. Once the regulator's in place then I just slide the window down. The arm has a little slide, you just slide the assembly right into the track on the window.
You slide the regulator into the track on the window, and then you lift up the whole regulator and window at the same time and line up the holes. Start your bolts that hold the regulator to the door, and then tighten them up nice and firm. Now we just reconnect the lead, and put the clip back in the door.
In the next shot, I turn the key on and I just run a little test up and down to make sure everything's working correctly. Speeding up again disconnect that switch. Bring the water shield back up carefully, make sure it goes on. What I do is I get the harnesses in place, get it around the door latch rod, and find a spot that lines it up with one of the holes that's in the shield. Then stick it back on, and also put my speaker back on.
The four Phillips screws put it in place nice and firm and reconnect the speaker. Before you put your door panel back on, make sure pull out any clips. Sometimes they stay in the door. Just clip them back into your door panel. Make sure you lift your panel up and it's in the right place here. It should be right in there. Door panel goes up. Press the panel against the window, bring it down, make sure your lock comes through. Latch it down.
Make sure we can get our window harness. Lock all your clips into place. Put your door handle, you'll have to fish your latch rod out and pull it out. Put the door handle down on top of it. I'll use my small screwdriver to push that clip and lock it on. Put the handle in place, slide it back. Fast-forward as we put that Phillips screw in at the door handle, and then the two underneath the arm rest. We can put this back in place. These little clips, push the center out, put it in, and lock it in place.
