Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing or maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20-plus years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly: that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.
In this video, I'm going to show you how to replace the side rear view mirror on this 1997 Cadillac DeVille, basically the same as any '94 to '97, although the door panels do differ from '94 to '96. Tools you'll need include a flat blade screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, as well as 8mm and 10mm sockets with a ratchet.
Start by carefully disconnecting the negative battery cable. This should on most on vehicles. It will be an 8mm wrench. First, take a flat blade screwdriver, insert the middle, and there's a little tab that when you push on it. This comes up, forward, and out. This back one, there's a little tab here. Just work your screwdriver in there lightly and pull it out. This one here, push on the tab, pry up and off. Do the same thing here. Push on that tab, pry up and out. Do the same thing here. Little tab, pry it out, and then pull that connector out.
Here on this courtesy light, carefully pry the front of it out. It comes out. There's a little tab right here, pull up on it like that. You want to remove this panel here. You basically want to go in, find, and pull it easy to make sure that the metal tabs don't get caught in your door panel in the leather and rip the leather. You can see this one's caught. I'll use the screwdriver, pry the leather right up, over, and out. These two connectors, push the little tab, disconnect that. Then on this tab and underneath here, push it down and disconnect that.
There are two screws: Philips right there and one right in here. When you go for this one, you want to have your screwdriver slightly angled. It's not straight in, so it's similar to the angle. I'm just going to fast-forward as I'm removing those two Philips screws. Once you remove those screws, lift your panel up and off and reach in behind and disconnect the speaker. Carefully pull down your water shield in your front.
The mirror connects in right here. One tab, pull it back with your thumb and pull the connector out. This little connector has a tab. You pry it out with a screwdriver, and then pull the connector up and out. Now there are three 10mm nuts up here. We'll fast-forward as we remove those three 10mm nuts. Once you get that out, you carefully pull the mirror away from the door. Feed the harnesses on through. Here's your mirror out.
At 1A Auto, our mirrors generally come in black. This mirror is working absolutely fine, so I'm just going to reinstall it. You can actually just install the black mirror and it will fix your problem of not being able to see behind you, or if you want to paint it to match, what you want to do is go to an automotive parts store that has a good paint department, and they can generally match the color either by using your paint code on your vehicle or by just taking them your old broken one and they'll just match a swatch of paint. Then they can put that paint into an air charged spray can and you can actually tape it off and paint the mirror yourself.
For reinstallation, just reverse the procedure. Feed the harnesses right down through. Make sure they come down through, go on through. Put the mirror back in place. I'm going to speed up as I put these nuts on and tighten them up. Every once in a while, I stand up. I'm just trying to position the mirror correctly, and then when I tighten them, make them firm, but don't over tighten.
Reattach your harnesses. Put your shield back up in place. To reinstall the panel, what you want to do is get your bottom three hooks in first. You just place them close to where they go. Re-connect our tweeter and make sure all our harnesses are coming through here. Our courtesy light back here. Then, as we rotate up these two harnesses, lift up on the panel, push it in, and make sure it goes in in the front and rear, and then push down. Make sure all our harnesses are out.
I'm going to fast-forward here again as we install those screws. Plug in our courtesy light back in place first. Put these connectors in, and this in, hook the bottom in first. Just remember to reconnect your battery, and you're all set.
