Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the spark plugs in a '97 Buick LeSabre. The same process goes for '97 through '99 LeSabres with the 3800 series engines. You'll need a set of six spark plugs from 1A Auto, a spark plug socket and a socket wrench.
This is a V6, meaning we're going to have six spark plugs. We've got three here, and then three on the other side, on the right side. Follow the spark plug wires back: one, two, and then the third one back in there. Using the 5/8 inch spark plug socket and the adjustable flex head and a 3/8"? ratchet, remove your ignition wire, starting with the first plug. Seat the socket on the spark plug, and loosen it up and pull it out.
You'll want to set the gap on the spark plug. The gap is the point between the outer diode and the inner part of the spark plug. What I have is a spark plug gap tool. This spark plug needs to be at .03060. That's 6/100ths of an inch. I choose the correct gap, and you should be able to slide the tool in and back out with a little bit of resistance.
Coming back in with the spark plug, make sure that the gap is set correctly. Start it by hand, and then tighten it up with the socket wrench. Around 20 foot pounds is a good torque spec for these spark plugs. Reinstall the ignition wire. You're going to repeat that process for all three spark plugs on the left side head. On the right side, it will be helpful if you have the correct socket and a flexible head socket wrench. You can get it from up top. There's not a lot of room, but these two things definitely make the job easier.
