Tailgate handle replacement on a S10, pretty easy. This is the bezel. You want to push down and bring it out. You can see it has two tabs that go down in. These tabs lock it in. You want to open up the tailgate here. Now there's three T40 or 40 Torx screws. Loosen them up. Now, I'll put the tailgate back up. Now that you have the tailgate handle loose, there are clips in here that hold the rods. You reach them with your thumb and your finger and pull that clip, pull that rod out. Now, let's see if I can get this other one. There's one right here. Pull that rod out and your tailgate handle should handily, unless I fumble around a little bit, should come up. Now, let's put it back in. Put it down in place.
The lower one comes from the right side of the truck. The other one. It's a little difficult, but not impossible. Then I'm going to start a screw in the back here. Actually, I'll start two so it holds it in place. Then we're going to open the tailgate. There are my two screws I started already. Put this one in. Tighten them all most of the way first. Then I tighten them up afterwards. Now, a good thing to do is just use some good white grease on your latches and also up here on the mechanism. Then last, pull the handle out just a little bit. You got to get the bottom in first. This truck could probably really use a new handle, but it seems to be working pretty good. That's how you take one out and put one in.
