How To Replace Taillights 1998-2005 Volkswagen Beetle

step 1 :Removing the Tail Light
- Pry off the panel behind the tail light with a flat blade screwdriver
- Remove the thumbscrew from the tail light
- Disconnect the tail light harness

step 2 :Servicing the Bulbs
- Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise out of the light
- Pull the bulb off of the socket
- Push on the new bulb
- Twist the bulb clockwise into the light

step 3 :Installing the Tail Light
- Connect the wiring harness
- Push the tail light into place
- Tighten the thumbscrew
- Push on the panel behind the tail light

In this video we are going to show how to service your taillight on this 1998 VW Beetle. It is pretty easy. You might just want a flashlight, but other than that, no tools are required.
We are going to service one of these tail lights, it is pretty easy process. You come in here, and you can see there is a round door there. You use a flat blade screwdriver and carefully pry that off, and right inside you can see there is a little thumbscrew.
Now I will just fast-forward a little bit as I just remove that thumbscrew.
Then you will pull up on the bottom of the light and it comes out. There is a connector here. If you are just looking to change your light bulbs, go counterclockwise and they come out. Then your taillight comes off.
The bulb is going to twist counterclockwise and out, and these are two different bulbs. You can see that one has two contacts on it, and this only has a single contact on it. When you are turning these, you do press them down and turn.
Reinstallation is pretty easy. You put the bulbs in and turn it clockwise to lock. Then put this stud right down into the hole, and make sure that stud goes in. You got two teeth over here, there is a little slot those go down in to, and just kind of shake your light into place. Push it down and then back in here, and put the thumb screw back on.
Now I will fast-forward again as I put that thumbscrew back on and tightened it up nice and firm.
Now put this back on. It does have an arrow that points down. Put that arrow down, and what I have found is just kind of get it on there, press it into place, and just kind of twist it until you get it all locked in.
