Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and the next time you need a part for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace a thermostat on this 1996 Chevy Tahoe. The items you'll need for this is a 13mm and 14mm socket and ratchet, a pair of pliers, jack and jack stands, drip pan, coolant, and a funnel.
Start off by removing your radiator cap. Then, raise your vehicle, and, right here, there is the drain plug. You just want to turn this and the coolant will start pouring. Using a pair of pliers just twist that drain plug. Make sure your drip pan is underneath and just let your coolant drain out.
Next, you want to remove this 14mm nut. Now, pull the ground wire off, and remove this 13mm bolt and the 13mm bolt on the other side. Now lift the housing up and off and pull your thermostat out.
Push your new thermostat into the place, lower the housing back down over it, and then replace those two 13mm bolts, and tighten them up. Torque these bolts to 25 foot-pounds, and then you can also, when you start the vehicle up, check for any leaking. If you do see any leaking around the housing, just tighten them up a little further.
Now, replace your ground wire, the 14mm nut, and then just tighten that up. Tighten up your drain plug, and then, using a funnel, replace the coolant. Then replace your radiator cap and you're all set.
