step 1 :Removing the Door Panel
- Pry off the trim piece inside the door pull with a flat blade screwdriver
- Remove the two Phillips head screws inside the door pull
- Remove the three T20 Torx bolts from the bottom of the door panel
- Pry out the door panel by hand
- Lift the door panel up and off
- Disconnect the wiring harnesses from the door panel
- Unclip the latch cable from the door handle

step 2 :Removing the Trunk Switch
- Turn the door panel upside down
- Pry out the trunk switch

step 3 :Installing the Trunk Switch
- Push the door lock switch into the door panel

step 4 :Installing the Door Panel
- Connect the wiring harnesses to the door panel
- Clip the latch cable to the door handle
- Lift the door panel into place
- Push in the door panel clips
- Insert the three T20 Torx bolts into the bottom of the door panel
- Insert the two Phillips screws inside the door pull
- Push on the door pull trim piece

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the trunk release switch on this 2001 Volkswagen Beetle. The only items you'll need for this are a flat blade screwdriver, a Phillips screwdriver, and a T20 Torx driver.
Start off by prying off this panel on your pull handle, and behind that, there are two Phillips screws. Just go ahead and remove both of those. At the bottom of the door panel, there are three T20 Torx bolts. Go ahead and remove those three. Now, you want to just pull out on the panel, just around the edges, and any screws that you loosened up all the way but wouldn't pull out entirely, they will fall out now, so just keep an eye on where they go. When all the clips are free except the top of the door panel, you just want to reach up here and pull it out of the track and pull it forward.
On the back of your door panel, you'll see a bunch of harnesses. Just push the tab and pull the harnesses free. Then, for your door handle cable, just pull it out of the bracket and then unhook it. You can just disconnect this harness for your door lock. For these two larger harnesses down here, you just want to pry it and free with a flat blade screwdriver. Just push the tab on this harness and disconnect your courtesy light.
Flip over your door panel and then pry out on the back of the switch while pulling on it, and it will pull free.
Take your new switch and just push it into place.
To reinstall your door panel, just reconnect each of those harnesses. Then re-clip your door handle cable and just push it back into that bracket and make sure you reconnect your courtesy light. Now, put the door panel back into the track and then just push it down. Then, just hit in the clips around the edge of the door panel and then replace those three T20 screws and the two Phillips screws in the pull handle. Just replace that panel and hit it into place and you're all set.
