How to Replace Windshield Wiper Switch 2004-09 Subaru Outback

step 1 :Disconnecting the Battery
- Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench
- Pull the negative terminal off the battery post

step 2 :Removing the Steering Column Panels
- Remove the Phillips head screw from the bottom of the steering column
- Lower the steering column release lever
- Pull off the lower steering column panel
- Remove the three Phillips head screws from bottom of the steering column
- Pull off the upper steering column panel

step 3 :Removing the Theft Module
- Unclip the electrical connectors from the steering column with a trim tool
- Loosen the Phillips screw from back of the theft module
- Release the theft module clip with a pick
- Pull the theft module off the ignition cylinder

step 4 :Removing the Wiper Switch
- Remove the two Phillips screws from the wiper switch
- Pull the wiper switch off the steering column
- Unplug the wiper switch electrical connector

step 5 :Installing the Wiper Switch
- Plug in the wiper switch electrical connector
- Slide the switch onto the steering column
- Insert the two Phillips screws into the wiper switch

step 6 :Installing the Theft Module
- Slide the theft module onto the ignition cylinder
- Tighten the Phillips screw into back of the theft module
- Clip the electrical connectors onto the steering column

step 7 :Installing the Steering Column Panels
- Line up the upper steering column panel on the column
- Install the three Phillips screws for the upper steering column panel
- Line up the lower steering column panel on the column
- Snap the two panels together
- Install the Phillips screw into the bottom of the lower panel
- Adjust and lock the steering column

step 8 :Reconnecting the Battery
- Connect the negative terminal to the battery post
- Tighten the battery terminal with a 10mm wrench
- Check that the terminal is firmly attached

In this video, we'll be removing and reinstalling a windshield wiper switch in a 2008 Subaru Outback. If you need parts for your vehicle, click in the link in the description and head over to 1AAuto.com.
We're going to disconnect the battery. We're going to use a 10 millimeter wrench. Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery. Loosen this up. Twist it back and forth. Pull that out of the way.
There's a Phillips head screw right here. We're going to take a Phillips head screwdriver to take this screw out. Then we're going to grab this panel with two hands and pull down, and then I'm going to pull this release, the adjuster for the steering column down, and then pull this panel out of the way.
Next, to pull the upper cover off, there are three Phillips head screws. They're hidden. You’ve kind of got to go in between these wiring harnesses here and go up there. That's for one. So, we'll take that one out. There it is. There's another one right here in front of this white connector here, and we'll take that one out. Pull that one out. Then for the last one, I'm going to pull the steering column outward and have it up with the adjuster down, and that one's over on this side. So once you get those out, put the steering column down, and then we can pull the upper cover off.
We're not going to disconnect the connector, but we're going to pull these connectors out of our way. I'm going to use a trim tool to get underneath here. Pry up and get that to release. Now, there's a Phillip's head screw on the back side of this theft module. I'm going to take my Phillip's head screw bit on a ratchet, and I just have to loosen it up just a little bit because it is slotted. You can't really see it, you've got to feel around for it. You just loosen it a couple of turns.
The screw is loose on the immobilizer on the front side. On the backside, there's a little clip. I'm going to use a right-angle pick, and I'll get underneath here and try to get under it and pry it up a little bit. Then I should be able to pull the immobilizer right off. All right, I'm going to loosen this screw a little bit more because it wasn't slotted too well. Then it slips right off.
I had to get underneath this with my pick, pry it up a little bit, then pull. This is where the screw was on this slot. We just unscrewed the screw and it slides right out. Right here is that screw, that Phillip's head screw. You've just got to loosen it probably about three turns. We're going to just let this immobilizer hang right here while we take the wiper switch out. You had to pull this off because this would have been in the way when pulling the wiper switch out, so you just need to get it out of your way.
We're going to take these two Phillip's head screws out. Pull that one out. You can grab it and slide it. Once it's out, it's easier to pop the connector off here. You just push down on this tab and slide it up.
We're going to reinstall this. We will take the connector, slide it up, make sure it's in properly all the way down. Then we can slide the windshield wiper switch down. Take our Phillip's head screws and install those. I'll just get this one started, then I'll get the other one started, then we can snug them both down.
Now we can install this immobilizer module/antenna. It'll click into place. You can grab a Phillips head bit on our ratchet and feel around for that Phillips head screw. We're just going to tighten it a little bit. All right, so once it's snug, just a little bit more, and that's it. I'm going to reconnect this connector. Pull down into the slot, there we go, till it locks in place.
Now we're going to put this cover on. Get that lined up good. We'll take our Phillips head screw and go up in that hidden location. I’m just going to get it started so then I can wiggle it around to get the other ones in if I need to, and then get this last one in back here. I'll pull the column adjustment lever down. All right, all those screws are started. Now, I'll snug them all down. Push down on the cover so it's lined up.
Now we're going to put the lower cover on. Slide this is. Get it lined up with the upper cover. When it's lined up, push it together. When it all clicks in place, you know it's in.
Next we'll take a Phillips head screw and install that right here. We can lock our steering wheel column.
Then we can reconnect our battery. Take a 10 millimeter wrench and tighten it up. I’m going to take and just wiggle the negative terminal, make sure that's good.
