How to Replace Wiper Arm 1999-2007 Chevy Silverado

Created on: 2020-06-24

Watch this video learn how to install a new windshield wiper arm on your 1999-2007 Chevy Silverado.

Tools needed

  • Razor Blade / Gasket Scraper

    13mm Socket

    Flat Blade Screwdriver

    Rust Penetrant

    Windshield Wiper Puller

    Wiper Arm Removal Tool

    Ratchet

Okay, friends, to start this job, obviously, the hood needs to be up. The next thing we would want to do is just kind of take a nice look at this and kind of gauge approximately how high the wiper blade is going to sit on the windshield. The next thing we want to do is just follow the arm down to this point right here. There's a little cover. Go ahead and take that off of there. Underneath that, you're going to see a 13-millimeter nut. More than likely it's going to be rusted like this one, so go ahead and hit it with some penetrant. Now that we've let that sit for a little while, let's go ahead and remove that nut. All right. Let's grab onto this and just see if we can wiggle it around. What we need to do is get the arm to break free from this stud. You might notice it doesn't want to. Okay. So, it's pretty obvious in this case that this is not coming off. I don't need to go any further. I don't want to break anything underneath it. The next thing I would recommend is a tool that looks a little like this, and this is going to help get that off of there.

I'm gonna take the two ears, slide it around the bottom side of the arm here, and then I'll go ahead and drive that driver down and it should separate the two pieces. There we are. Get the tool off of there. Now, we can lift this right up and off. So, obviously, our hose is still attached to this right here. This is a nice 90-degree bend, and our new part comes with a new one. If yours isn't broken or leaking or damaged in any way, I would probably just leave this in where it is and remove the hose directly from it. The reason for that is because if I go to remove this and it breaks something down inside there, it's going to lead to a further issue and I'll have to remove this whole cowl. A simple way to get this off would be using something like a razor blade and you can just go ahead and cut that hose, grab onto it, and remove it. The next thing I would want to do is get the blade right off of here. If you were to lift up like this, you can see there's a little tab, squeeze that tab, and then we can separate the two. Inspect your blade, make sure it's in good condition. If it needs to be replaced, well, now's the time to do it.

Now, we have our new arm and our wiper blade. Let's go ahead and put the hook in. See if I can get it through there, lock it in, give it a nice push. Make sure that the wiper blade is completely secured. Let's put this right up and in here. We've got our hose. It needs to come up and over and then we'll put this on, and then, of course, the hose will make its way down and over there. Let's get this lined up to approximately where it was. That looks decent. Now, I'm just going to press this down so that it's sitting over the stud there. Take our nut, start it on there. Go ahead and snug it up. Okay. Not pretty much bottomed out, teeny bit more, give it a nice wiggle, make sure that it's completely secured. All right. So, let's go ahead and twist that back in the direction it needs to go. Now, if you're not replacing this piece right here, you should be able to just kind of grab onto it. And if you're strong enough, you should be able to pull it off. If for some reason you couldn't pull it off, you can go ahead and trim off the very end of it. And as long as you have enough slack so that you can get right onto this right there, my finger out of the way, comes around, push it right up on there. You want to make sure you have slack coming right around this, okay? It's going to come out right up and around the top, and it just kind of hangs out there. You want to make sure that it's not so short that when the wiper arm comes up or goes down, it puts a tug on this hose. Do not forget about our little cover here. Go ahead and slide it on over that. Now it's going to be time for a test. Awesome.
