How To Replace Wiper Motor 1988-99 Chevy Suburban

In this video we will be showing the steps to replace a wiper motor in this '99 Suburban, same as most '88 to '98 Chevy trucks and '92 to '98 SUVs. Tools you'll need are pretty simple: flat blade screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, and 10 and 11 millimeter socket and ratchet set.

To remove the windshield wiper arm, pretty easy. You flip the arm up and there's a little tab right here and that pulls up. Then you can just work your hand underneath there and pull it up and off, same thing for the other side. After you remove the wiper arms, you're going to remove six Phillips screws. One there, one in that round hole there, you probably can't see, but it's in there, one there, one there and then finally one right there. I'll remove those six. Okay for all these corner ones when you pull it up there's this little grille here just pull that back, up, and off, screw comes out with it. After you pull those covers back on the side there's two more screws underneath on the edges. There are two more screws right here along the edge, turn them. Both those screws are out, pull them up over the wiper and don't forget to disconnect your windshield washer hose right here.

Now I'm going to put my penetrating oil down there for a little bit, loosen it up. The driver side linkage will comes off. Passenger side linkage comes off. Once you have those wiper transmissions unhooked, your wiper motors right here under the hood, three 10 millimeter bolts, your harness is hooked right here to the little lock, you pull out with your thumb and the harness you pull up on this with your hand and unplug the harness. Then you have the three bolts to take off. Once those bolts are out, give it a hard, it just sticks on here a little bit. The whole thing pulls out like that. Here's my original motor, here's my new motor from 1A Auto.

The motors are all the same. You may run into this, the new motor comes with a single ball, on this vehicle, on this truck that I'm working on it has this double ball so if I was replacing this motors' actually fine so I'm going to put it back on the truck I'm just using it as an example, but if I was replacing it you just remove this 13 millimeter nut and you basically tap the arm a little bit, it will loosen and pull it off. Try to put the new arm in the same position. If you want you can actually turn these so you can point the arm right at save this grommet, make sure you put them all in the same position. I'll show you how to line it up when we put it back in the truck. The top of the arm, its 13 millimeter, pull it off there. You might need to put this in a vice to get the bolt out, but it's not that big of a deal.

Now I'll put the original one back in the truck I'm going to clean up this ball here a little bit first. Putting the motor back in, pretty obvious, put the arm in, hold it in there, put in your three bolts. I'm going to save you watching me tighten these bolts up, just fast forward through it here, obviously you need to reconnect your harness and lock it back in place. If I take this and I pull it up a little bit you want your arm facing that way once you've put it back together. You want this one to go right on that inside ball on this truck. We'll just tighten up a little bit; actually we'll align them first. You want to pop it on right there, tighten it up a little bit and it's okay if they're sliding a little bit.

Got my wiper arms back on and I can take them back off and put the grille on, but you can see without those transmissions tightened you can move your arms back and forth a little bit. You can just get them where you want them as long as they're in parked position and then you can tighten them up. Then after you have them tightened up. Let them run a couple times to see if they go down back where you want them. I'm actually going to adjust this one down a little bit more. Once you have your wiper arms where you want them you want to tighten up the transmissions. I'm fast forwarding through putting the grille back on just because the YouTube 10 minutes, but you want to put the two screws in that you can reach under the hood, put those on then lower the hood.

Put your corner screws that are underneath on first then put the corner bezels or trim back on and tighten up all the rest of the screw and you should be good to go with some nice quiet, new wipers that are working correctly. Obviously once the grilles back on then you want to put the wipers back on as well.
