In this video, Andy shows you the most common problems found on the 1st generation Ford Fusion, which is available in model years 2006 to 2012.
In this video we're going over the top five problems on this first-generation Ford Fusion.
Number one, the alternator. This vehicle actually just had this problem and we fixed it. We replaced the alternator and the charging system's fixed. What you may notice for symptoms is your battery will die on you or you're driving down the road and you notice the little battery light on your dash. The alternator's located right down here, and it's very tricky to get to. You have to get to it from underneath and remove a lot of components. If you have the four cylinder version, it may not be as hard as this.
Number two, swollen lug nuts. Now, a lot of people complain of the lug nuts actually swelling and some of that is due to the corrosion. There is little caps over the lug nuts. And when that happens it's hard to get the socket onto the lug nuts to be able to remove them. This happens on other vehicles but it's very common on this Ford Fusion. The repair for this is replacing the lug nuts.
Number three, the shifter assembly. You may notice when you put the vehicle in park that you can't take the key out of the ignition. In that case, a lot of times it's the shifter assembly itself. The internals have been worn or damaged, and it just needs to be replaced and then you can take the key out.
Number four, a power steering fluid leak. Now, your power steering fluid is located right here. It takes MERCON V, which is automatic transmission fluid. You may notice while you're going down the road and you're turning the wheel, you may hear a whining noise. That's probably because your power steering fluid's low. The reason why it's low is one of the hoses has probably sprung a leak, and it's gonna have to be fixed.
The power steering pump is located behind the passenger side wheel right in here, and you may notice some fluid coming all in this area. This vehicle actually had this problem and was completely wet. And you can see there's a little drip right there. But it's definitely better than it was. This is the hose that was actually leaking. And the clamp that clamps this hose is right above here, and it's not clamping down enough force. So what you wanna do is put a worm clamp on there and that'll get you by temporarily until you replace that hose.
Number five, the water pump. You may notice some coolant leaking in this area of the engine behind the AC compressor or behind the alternator, and there's a weep hole right behind the alternator that allows coolant to leak out if there's a problem with the water pump. The water pump on this vehicle is driven by the timing chain so it's inside the engine. So it's hard to tell if it's leaking. So if you notice coolant in this area, it's most likely the water pump and it's gonna have to be replaced.
