Top 5 Problems Mercury Mountaineer SUV 3rd Generation 2006-10

Created on: 2021-01-30

Andy points out the top 5 most common problems we have found with the 3rd generation Mountaineer, and he gives you tips on how you can fix those problems yourself!

Here we have a third generation Mercury Mountaineer. In this video, we're gonna go over the top five problems.

Number one, the front hub assemblies. You may notice while you're going down the road that you hear a helicopter noise or it sounds like a jet plane. Especially when you're turning back and forth, you'll notice it come in and out. Most likely that's coming from the hub bearings. The other thing you may notice if you have the wheel on the car and you shake the wheel, there may be some play, and that's because the internals have loosened up on the bearing. The only way to fix this is to replace the bearing.

Number two, the electronic running boards. Not all these vehicles have the electronic running boards, but if you have them, and over time you live in an area where there's a lot of salt and sand, you're gonna have problems. These hinges are gonna corrode and cause these running boards to stay down. And even the motors will get sand and debris in them, and then they're not gonna work. The only way to fix this really is to take them all apart and lubricate all the components. If it gets corroded to the point where you can't clean them, you're gonna have to replace the whole thing.

Number three, the shift interlock control module. Now that's part of the shifter assembly. If you remove all these pieces, you can access that module. And one of the symptoms you're gonna find when you go to shift the car out of park, it's not shifting out of park. Sometimes part of that problem is moisture getting in there, especially if someone's drinking coffee or other beverages and they spill down in there, that's gonna cause that module to short out and not work.

Number four, the heater control actuator and the heater control actuator door. So you may notice while you're driving and you have the heat on, you go to turn it down and the heat is stuck in the on position or you hear this clicking noise coming from the dash. If you hear the clicking noise, most likely it is the heater control actuator and it needs to be replaced. If you go to replace that actuator and it still is stuck on heat, that door is probably what's stuck. To replace that door, it's a pretty involved job. You have to remove the whole heater box and replace that door.

Number five, the intake manifold runner control module. Now it's located on the back side of the intake. You're probably not gonna see much drivability issues. Maybe a little...acceleration issues, but you'll have a check engine light with a P2007 and a P2006 code. Like I said, it's on the back side of the intake. It kinda looks like a wiper motor. You have to remove the intake to get to it, and there's two rods coming off and a swivel point.

So there you go. There's our top five problems for this Mercury Mountaineer. If you enjoyed this video, make sure you subscribe to our channel, ring the bell, turn on all notifications so you don't miss any of our videos.
