Andy points out the most common problems that we have found on the Prius.
In this video, we're going to go over the top five problems on this third-generation Toyota Prius. There's nothing wrong with this vehicle. There's nothing wrong with owning one or buying one. All vehicles have their problems. These are the top five that we have found. Number one, the center multi-function display. It's located right here. Now it may fail and stop working. The reason this may fail is because the poorly soldered internal connections. Now, this can be repaired by a shop that specializes in this type of repair.
Number two, the fuel gauge. Now, the fuel gauge may read inaccurate which isn't going to be good. You don't want to run out of fuel. To repair this, you've going to have to go to the dealer and have it recalibrated.
Number three, the EGR valve. Now, it's located right here and what happens with these is it is going to plug up with carbon and there's a port right here that runs to the intake, and that's going to plug up with carbon. And it's going to end up giving you a check engine light with a code, P219A Bank 1 Air/Fuel Ratio. What you can do is take this off, take the EGR valve off, take this tube off, and try to clean it all out. It's going to be a little bit difficult. There's some small ports in there, but it is possible. That might fix your problem. If not, you've gonna have to replace it.
Number four, the water pump. Now it's located on the front of the engine, way down here where a typical water pump would be on an engine. Now, some of the symptoms on this are going to be a little bit different than a conventional water pump. It's probably not going to leak like a conventional, and you're not going to have the noise like a bearing noise. But you are going to get a check engine light and if you get a check engine light with a water pump code, don't ignore it. You could blow the engine. You definitely want to have it replaced as soon as possible.
Number five, the plate light bulb. Now, what happens with these is the bulbs heat up the socket, and the socket will melt. That's going to cause them to burn out. The fix for this is to take those bulbs out and put some LED bulbs in. They're not going to be as hot and they're not going to melt.
