Andy points out the most common engine problems with the 2004-2008 Nissan Maxima.
In this video, we're going over the top engine problems that you should look out for on this 2004 to 2008 Nissan Maxima. Pulling the engine cover off, the first thing we're gonna talk about is ignition coils. You have the three on the front, which is bank two, and the three on the back, which you can't even access without taking the intake off. The symptoms you're gonna find with bad coils is the engine's gonna be running rough. You probably have a check engine light on, and it may be flashing. In the event that you do have a bad coil, you wanna replace it as soon as possible. Otherwise, you're gonna cause damage to the catalytic converters and also damage to other coils. Which when one goes bad, it's a good idea to replace them all anyway. It's also a great idea to replace the spark plugs while you're doing the coils. To replace the spark plugs, you just pull the coil out and the spark plugs underneath the coil itself.
Now let's talk about the cam sensors. Some of the symptoms you're gonna find is the engine is stalling while you're driving around, or you may find an oil leak coming from the sensor itself. The cam sensor is on the back of the head. And there's two of them. There's one on bank two, which is right here, and there's one on the other bank, which is a little harder to get to. And those are gonna read the positions of the camshafts as they're spinning. They're fairly easy to replace. You just disconnect this connector right here and push down on this tab. Slide the connector off just like that. Remove that 10-millimeter bolt. Take the sensor out, put the new sensor in, put the bolt back in, tighten it up, and put the connector back on.
And the last thing we're gonna talk about, probably the most important, is the timing chain and that's underneath this cover. Some of the things you may notice while the vehicle is running, a tapping noise coming from that area. You don't wanna ignore this. It's extremely important to get this addressed sooner than later. The reason for the failure is the timing chain tensioner and guides. They wear out and cause the chain to be loose. That could cause the timing to jump and cause internal engine damage. To replace it, it's a fairly big job. You need to remove everything in front of the engine, take the timing cover off. Replace the chain, the guides, and also the tensioners themselves. It's not something you normally have to do. It's not necessarily a maintenance item, but when you hear that noise, definitely take care of that. Those are the top engine problems for this Nissan Maxima. If you enjoyed this video or it helped you out, make sure you subscribe to our channel.
