You see us do a lot of repairs on our lift at the shop, but at home, most of these repairs can be done on a jack and jack stands in the driveway or in your garage at home. If you're unsure of how to safely raise and support your vehicle, these simple steps will make sure you can get underneath your car to work on it safely.

Using a wheel chock or block of wood, we're going to chock our front wheel, so when we jack up the back of the truck, it keeps the vehicle from rolling forward. If you’re jacking up the front of the vehicle only, you can simply make sure the vehicle's in park, or that the e-brake is on.

Slide the jack under your vehicle from the back, and line it up to raise the vehicle from the differential, bring the vehicle up until you have sufficient space to remove the wheels or work on any other component you're jacking up the vehicle to get at. Place the jack stand under the axle, then raise it up to a point where it will hold it with a sufficient space for you to work, slide the lock in, set the jack stand to the same height and approximate location on the other side. Lower the vehicle slowly onto the jack stands.

Under the front of the vehicle, we'll place the jack under the front cross member, as close to center as we can, and bring the vehicle up until we have adequate room to work on it. This particular truck is a 4-wheel drive with a front torsion bar style suspension, so we'll use our jack stands and support our vehicle from the torsion bar brackets in the back here. On a 2-wheel drive, you should have a transmission cross member here that you can support it from, or you can use the other parts of the solid front beam on either side of your jack and secure it from there. Slowly lower your vehicle onto the stands.

Now that we have our vehicle raised and supported we should have sufficient space to make any repairs needed under the vehicle. Re-position your jack and lift the vehicle off of the stands, remove the safeties, and lift the handle, and remove your jack stands on both sides. Slowly lower the vehicle back onto its wheels.

If you have to lower the rear-end, be sure that your wheel chock is in place. Jack up on the differential again, bring the weight of the vehicle off of the stands. Remove the safeties, lift the handle and remove the stands on both sides. Carefully lower the vehicle back onto its wheels.
