Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to recognize, find, and replace an alternator fuse on this 2005 Hyundai Elantra. They can get snapped when you jump start your car sometimes. Tools you'll need are 10mm and 12mm sockets with a ratchet and extension.
If your battery light comes on and stays on as you can see here, the car starts up and you can see right there, you can see the brake light on the right and your battery light on the left. If that comes on and stays on, you're going to want to check your alternator fuse.
Locate the three Phillips head plastic tabs and your one 10mm bolt on the airbox. Here's a close-up of those tabs or clips. You just unscrew the middle, pull it up and out and then the clip comes up and out. We'll just fast forward as we take, like we said, three clips out in the front, and then a 10mm bolt and then lift that shield right out.
Looking between the battery and front cross member, you can see there the red circle is a 12mm bolt that you'll need to remove. Get my 12mm, my extension, and take out the battery hold down. We'll go in a little fast motion here. With a 10mm socket or ratchet and wrench, remove the negative first and then the positive. For the positive the bolt is right up on top. Loosen it up and then you can pull the positive cable right up and off. Now grab the battery and pull it up and out. It is heavy.
I've located the two 10mm screws/bolts that hold the alternator fuse in place. I'm going to remove both. Then to get better access, I'm going to remove the air box cover with the two clips. Pull it out and away. Pull up and out.
If you look closely on the inside you'll see that the bridge of the fuse is not there, meaning that the fuse is blown. On the new one you'll see that the bridge is there.
I'm installing my new fuse and reinstalling the 10mm bolts.
You'll want to take the cap from the positive lead and put that on your new battery. I'm putting the battery back in. Put in the battery hold-down bracket. Put your hold-down bolt back in. Start it out by hand. Make sure the battery's good and secure. I'm going to put the positive terminal back on first. Put the cap on the positive. It's generally good practice to put the positive cable on first, and then the negative cable on the negative terminal.
