 The Sharp Excalibur

Excalibur is known for its neoclassic cars-a car built of modern components with a classic style-that have attracted many celebrities over the years, such as Steve McQueen, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. They are known for their high-quality and old school styling.

After redesigning the Studebaker GT Hawk, Brooks Stevens of Brooks Stevens Design Associates was approached by Studebaker in 1963 to create some prototypes for future auto shows. Stevens admired the late 1920s Mercedes SS Phaeton and SSK models, so it's no surprise that many of Stevens' designs resemble these.

However, right before the prototype debuted, Studebaker decided to pull out of the New York Auto Show, leaving Brooks with the car. He found a way to premiere it there anyway, and it stirred enough buzz to enable him to start Excalibur with his sons David and Steve.

The original prototype was built on a Studebaker Lark Daytona chassis and had a supercharged 289ci V8 with an output of 290 horsepower, but the company opted for its own chassis and Chevy's 327ci V8 with an output of 300 horsepower with the Series I, its first model. Buyers could choose from the SSK Roadster, the SS Roadster, or the convertible SS Phaeton. The models earned a reputation for quick acceleration, capable of reaching 60 mph in seven seconds or less.

Excalibur Today

Excalibur's life under the Stevens' ownership endured a few changes over the five Series they released. The engines were eventually upgraded to the 454ci V8 found in the Corvette, and by the mid-‘80s, the brand offered electrical amenities like a retractable soft top, adjustable seats and windows, and a stereo. Excalibur has offered many body styles, including a limousine-but it never made massive sales, and, unfortunately, sales dipped further following a recession, causing the brothers to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1986.

The company was saved and underwent a number of ownership changes before settling with Alice Preston of Camelot Classic Cars, Inc. Even though the last cars produced by Excalibur came out in 1997, the company still sells parts and performs restorations as the Excalibur Automobile Corporation. It hopes to manufacture new models one day.
