step 1 :Draining the Oil
- Open the hood
- Twist off the oil cap
- Raise and support the vehicle
- Have a drain pan ready
- Remove the drain plug with a 13mm socket and ratchet
- Allow the oil to drain
- Reinstall the drain plug
- Tighten the drain plug to 18 foot-pounds of torque
- Clean the oil pan with a rag

step 2 :Replacing the Oil Filter
- Loosen the oil filter canister cap, using a 24 mm socket ratchet
- Have a rag ready
- Pull out the oil filter canister cap and the filter
- Pull the filter out of the cap
- Insert the new oil filter into the cap
- Remove the old O-ring from the cap with a pick
- Apply oil to the new O-ring
- Roll the new O-ring onto the cap
- Twist the oil filter cap into place
- Tighten the cap to 18 foot-pounds

step 3 :Filling the Oil
- Lower the vehicle to the ground
- Pour six quarts of oil into the oil fill neck
- Twist on the oil cap
- Remove the oil dipstick
- Wipe off the dipstick
- Insert the dipstick
- Remove the dipstick
- Check the oil level
- Insert the dipstick
- Close the hood

step 4 :Resetting the Oil Information
- Turn the car on
- Scroll through the information center menu to "Engine Oil Life"
- Hold the clear button
- Turn the car off
- Turn the car on
- Check that "Engine Oil Life" now reads as 100%

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the engine oil and filter in a 2005 Cadillac CTS. The items you will need are a new oil filter from 1AAuto.com, six quarts of 5w-30 synthetic engine oil, a 13 and a 24 mm socket as well as a ratchet and extension, a torque wrench, a pick, a drain bucket, paper towels, a jack and jack stands.
Open your hood. Locate and remove your oil cap. Raise and support your vehicle. While this job can easily be done on a jack and jack stands, we're going to put it on a lift to make it easier to film and show you what's going on. The oil drain plug is located at the rear of the engine on the passenger side.
Make sure you have a drain bucket located underneath your drain plug. Remove that plug with a 13 mm socket and ratchet. Once the oil has come down to a drip, go ahead and reinstall your oil plug. Using a 13 mm socket and torque wrench you're going to want to torque that to 18 foot-pounds. Wipe the bottom dry with a clean rag.
Using a 24 mm socket and extension and a ratchet, loosen the oil filter canister cap just below and behind the oil fill hole in the top of the motor. I like to have a handful of rags or thick paper towels ready so when you remove the oil filter you can cover it and flip it over without making a mess. Remove the oil filter from the housing. It just pops out. Place it into your drain bucket.
Then take our new oil filter from 1AAuto.com. You can see the filters are exactly the same, and I'm going to go ahead and pop that back in. It just presses in there. We'll use a small pick to remove the old O-ring from the canister and wipe some clean oil on the O-ring here to help lubricate it. I just put a drop on my finger there. We'll lay it over the oil filter housing and it just rolls down and into the bottom channel in the cover.
Reinstall your oil filter into the housing. Going to bring it down by hand. Using your 24 mm socket and the torque wrench, torque the oil filter housing cap to 18 foot-pounds.
This vehicle takes six quarts of 5W-30 full synthetic engine oil. You can use a funnel if you like, but they have a pretty good size opening on the top there. When you're done filling your engine, reinstall the oil cap and check the fluid level on your dipstick.
Remove the oil dipstick, wipe it clean, reinstall it, remove it again, and check that your oil level is full. These 3 dots designate the fill level in the engine. This one being a quart low, half a quart low, and full. Ours is just a hair over the full line which is good because our oil filter is going to take up a little bit of that when we run the engine. Clean it off and reinstall.
Turn the key to the run position which is one click before it starts the engine. Go to your driver information center if you have the base audio system. Use the arrows to scroll through until you find engine oil life. Hold the clear button down. When it turns to 100% shut the car off, turn it back on, and confirm that you now have 100% oil life
